In this article, we’ll dive into the history and ingredients of süberlig, and why it should be on your list of must-try Turkish dishes.

The History of süberlig

Süberlig, also known as “sütlü börek” or “milk pastry”, has been a part of Turkish cuisine for centuries. It originated in the Ottoman Empire and was a popular dish among the royal court. Over time, it became a beloved dish in Turkish households and is now a common item on restaurant menus.

What is süberlig?

Süberlig is a savory pastry made with layers of phyllo dough, filled with a mixture of cheese and parsley, and soaked in a milk and egg mixture. It is then baked until golden brown and served warm.

The name “süberlig” comes from the Turkish word “sütlü”, meaning “with milk”, and “börek”, which refers to any dish made with phyllo dough.

Ingredients

The key ingredients in süberlig are phyllo dough, cheese, parsley, milk, and eggs. The type of cheese used can vary, but the most common is feta cheese. Parsley adds a fresh and herbaceous flavor to the dish, while the milk and eggs create a creamy and rich texture.

Other ingredients that can be added to the filling include spinach, ground meat, or potatoes. However, the traditional recipe calls for just cheese and parsley.

How to Make süberlig

Making süberlig may seem intimidating, but it is quite simple. Here is a step-by-step guide to making this delicious Turkish dish.

Ingredients:

  • 1 package of phyllo dough
  • 1 cup of crumbled feta cheese
  • 1/2 cup of chopped parsley
  • 1 cup of milk
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/4 cup of melted butter
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine the crumbled feta cheese, chopped parsley, and salt and pepper.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk and eggs.
  4. Grease a baking dish with melted butter.
  5. Lay a sheet of phyllo dough in the baking dish and brush it with melted butter.
  6. Repeat this process with 5 more sheets of phyllo dough, brushing each layer with melted butter.
  7. Spread half of the cheese and parsley mixture on top of the phyllo dough.
  8. Layer 6 more sheets of phyllo dough on top of the cheese mixture, brushing each layer with melted butter.
  9. Spread the remaining cheese and parsley mixture on top of the phyllo dough.
  10. Layer the remaining sheets of phyllo dough on top, brushing each layer with melted butter.
  11. Pour the milk and egg mixture over the top of the phyllo dough.
  12. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the top is golden brown.
  13. Let it cool for a few minutes before serving.

Serving and Pairing süberlig

Süberlig is best served warm, straight out of the oven. It can be enjoyed as a main dish or as a side dish with a salad or soup. It is also a popular breakfast dish in Turkey, often served with a cup of Turkish tea.

For a complete Turkish dining experience, pair süberlig with other traditional dishes such as kebabs, dolma (stuffed grape leaves), and baklava for dessert.

Where to Find süberlig

Süberlig can be found in most Turkish restaurants, but it is also a popular dish in Turkish households. If you have a Turkish friend or neighbor, ask them if they can make süberlig for you. It is a dish that is often made for special occasions and gatherings, so you may be lucky enough to try a homemade version.

Conclusion

While süberlig may not enjoy the same level of fame as some other Turkish dishes, its delightful and comforting flavors have won the hearts of many food enthusiasts.. With its layers of flaky phyllo dough, creamy cheese filling, and hints of parsley, it is a dish that will leave you wanting more.

Next time you’re at a Turkish restaurant or have the opportunity to try homemade süberlig, be sure to give it a try. Your taste buds will thank you.
